Formula & Methodology
This calculator models FICO® score impact using the five official scoring categories and their published weights:
- Payment History (35%): Sub-score = on-time payment rate (0–100%)
- Amounts Owed / Utilization (30%): Sub-score = 100 × max(0, 1 − √(utilization/100))
- Length of Credit History (15%): Sub-score = 100 × min(1, avg_age / 7)
- Credit Mix (10%): Sub-score = 100 × (types − 1) / 4
- New Credit / Inquiries (10%): Sub-score = 100 × max(0, 1 − inquiries/6)
Composite Raw Score (0–100):
R = 0.35×Spay + 0.30×Sutil + 0.15×Sage + 0.10×Smix + 0.10×Sinq
Map to FICO Range (300–850):
FICOestimated = 300 + R × 5.5
Projected Score:
FICOprojected = currentScore + (FICOnew − FICOcurrent_estimated), clamped to [300, 850]
Assumptions & References
- Weights are based on FICO®'s publicly disclosed scoring factor percentages (myFICO.com).
- The utilization sub-score uses a square-root curve to reflect FICO's non-linear penalization above 30% and reward below 10%.
- Credit age plateaus at 7 years, consistent with FICO research showing diminishing returns beyond that point.
- Hard inquiries are modeled as impactful up to 6 in 12 months; beyond that, the inquiry sub-score floors at 0.
- This is an estimation tool. Actual FICO scores depend on proprietary algorithms, full credit report data, and lender-specific models.
- Score bands: Poor <580, Fair 580–669, Good 670–739, Very Good 740–799, Exceptional 800+. (Source: Experian / myFICO)
